Roller Derby Rulez!

Ξ January 29th, 2009 |

Yesterday was my first practice for the South Jersey Derby Girls. It was amazing!

I’ve been a skater since I was about five years old. My Uncle Dominick used to take us kids to the skating rink twice a week. It was sort of the thing to do back in the late 1980’s. You speed skated, shuffled, and couple skated to Freestyle music. I remember lock-ins and video games! Just thinking back makes me smile.

Anyway, when I turned twelve it was Rollerblades for me all day every day. So you could imagine what I looked like yesterday on quad( 2 rows of 2) skates. HA! It was amusing to say the least.

My friend Kelly and I went together. The girls were amazing on and off the rink. The practice was two hours long and by the time we were done I had already improved. I was sweating and my legs hurt like hell, but I was feeling better then I have in months. When I say better, I mean mentally and physically.

I was up half the night on-line, to excited to sleep, shopping for skates.

Practice is two days a week for two to four hours. Our first game is in March, so if I push myself I just might get to play.

Check out the team I’m going to be proud to be a part of at www.myspace.com/southjerseyderby and www.sjderbygirls.com

O, and the most important thing about being a derby girl is choosing a derby name. I know I have a ways to go before I have to worry about that. However, some suggestions would be cool if anyone has any ideas.

GO DERBY!
