Ann E Maul #503

Started Playing Derby: November 2013

Team:  South Jersey Roller Derby Travel Team, Bruised Beauties

How did you choose your derby name & number?

I wanted a name that describes my passion for animals. I am a certified animal cruelty investigator and was working in Camden city so I figured I would go with my badge number 503 and the name Ann E Maul

What led you to roller derby?
After highschool I was looking for a new sport to try out. Then South Jersey derby was out front of my house on Berlin day so I decided to give it a try.

What was your biggest hurdle when you first started derby?

Skating in general! I started without knowing how to skate. So everything was a challenge for me. Being able to take a hit and stay standing was also difficult because my balance wasn't there.

What does being a South Jersey Roller Derby member mean to you?

Being a member of South Jersey derby is being a part of a team as well as a family. We all help each other on and off the track.

What would you recommend for a new rookie joining the league?

Rookies should never give up with practice, things do get easier over time. Don't be afraid to try anything and never doubt yourself.

What is your derby goal?

My goals are to be a better skater all around. To become faster and consistently blow people up on every hit! Along with becoming an okay jammer.

Any notes you'd like to share?

I'd like to thank everyone who has helped me or pushed me through drills that I didn't think I could do. Along with believing in me.

What is a fun fact about yourself?

I don't like doing anything without my friends ! When I joined derby my friend was suppose to join as well and never showed up. My first practice was a nightmare and I wanted to quit. I was talked into staying and now love it. This was the first big thing outside of my comfort zone!
