Featured Skater of the Month - December 2013

Sylvia Wrath #1963

Started Playing Derby: Nov 2012

Team:  Kill Scouts, South Jersey Derby B Travel Team

How did you choose your derby name & number?

The Bell Jar is my favorite book, so it was a pretty easy decision. I was also thinking about being Dealthy Zbornak, which is a Golden Girls reference, but I didn't think ANYONE would get it.

What lead you to roller derby?
I liked roller skating as a kid and needed a new hobby. I saw a SJDG sweatshirt on a customer at Whole Foods in Marlton and googled the league when I got home. Nerdy, I know.

What was your biggest hurdle as a rookie?

I was terrified of falling and getting hurt. In early December of my first year, I did fall in the warehouse during a Training Wheels practice and broke my arm. Luckily, it wasn't that bad and I was back on skates in less than two months.

What does being a South Jersey Derby member mean to you?

It means that I get to do a really cool thing with really cool people. I love the look on people's faces when I tell them I play roller derby. It'd be worth it just for that, but I've also made some good friends (shout out to Scary Magdalene).

What would you recommend for a new rookie joining the league?

Go to as many practices as possible. The more you go in the beginning, the more the skills will stick with you. Also, don't be afraid to try something. Most of the time, you'll be able to do it after the first couple of tries. Get outdoor wheels for trail skates!

What is your derby goal?

My goal is to stop doubting myself and keep getting faster.

Any notes you'd like to share?

Liz & Perna were the best coaches! Even though they were both scary at first, I love them now. Except for when they conspired to give Scary, Apple Bottom, & me the "Neediest Training Wheels" award at the team banquet. We are not needy, we are just inquisitive!

What is a fun fact about yourself?

I was an extra in one episode on season 2 of Grey's Anatomy. I don't even like that show, but my mom's friend worked on the set and got me the job when I was visiting in 2005.
