Featured Skater of the Month - February 2013

Annapocalypse #2012

Team: Doomsday Dolls

When did you start? February 2012

How did you pick your derby name?

I love blocking so I wanted to have a name that made it obvious I was a blocker and also used part of my name (my middle name is Anne).  It took a few months but one day it just hit me.

What lead you to roller derby?

I used to be a competitive figure skater and quit shortly after moving to Pennsylvania. I've missed skating and wanted to get back into it and meet new people. I saw a segment on some morning show one day about roller derby and started searching for leagues right away.

What was your biggest hurdle when you first started?

Getting back into shape. When I started I was severely overweight which made practices very difficult and probably led to my concussion, MCL sprain and torn Retinaculum in my knee. But over the past couple months I've lost 50lbs and really started to focus on improving my endurance and skills. Next hurdle is jumping on the banked track :)

What does being a South Jersey Derby member mean to you?

It means being part of a close group of friends that are more like family. We support each other in not only derby but our lives outside the track. I feel so fortunate to be part of this league. We have been through a lot this past year but have managed to make it though and stay positive.

What would you recommend for a new rookie coming in?

Stick with it! The first couple weeks/months can be brutal depending on what shape you're in when you start but the payoff is so worth every bruise, cut and broken bone.

What's your derby goal?

To make the MADE all-star team

Anything else fun you'd like to add?

Thank you to all the veterans that spend their free time coaching us every week. Thank you so much! Not only do they attend their own practices several nights a week but then they come and have to deal with all of us newbies :) Thanks Monster for never letting me give up and always being such a positive derby role model. Mos Deathly, you rock! Thank you for all that you do for us. <3

What's a little known fact about yourself?

I've been a Girl Scout for 20 years and I'm still active in the community. I also spend several hours a week at my local animal shelter because as most know I love animals and would adopt them all if I had the space.
