LOVE CITY Featured Skater of the Month - June 2013

A-Lo #36-24-36

When did you start playing roller derby?
November 2011

What teams are you on?
Love City, Lipstick Militia, South Jersey Derby, Bruised Beauties

What led you to roller derby?
Being a wife and mother of four I slowly lost who I was and started living for everyone except for me. My eldest daughter saw whip it and convinced me that Derby was just what I needed. Derby gave me back me and a better me I might add. It let me be me. I love Derby. This is not a hobby to me this is a life commitment. It changed the way I ate, the way I work out, and my whole outlook on being healthy and strong. You could say Derby truly saved my soul

What is your favorite position to play?
When I first started out because of my size and speed I was always played as a Jammer or Pivot but my secret love was to block. I've gotten better and better at blocking and am now a force to be feared. I love being a 3 I can hang back and keep the Jammer at bay but am fast enough to catch up with the pack. Which is an important tool for a blocker.

What is your greatest achievement in Derby?
Going to Puerto Rico to play for Team Puerto Rico in the Team Mainland Vs Team vs Team Puerto Rico game.  It was one of the proudest moments of my life. I was able to represent my island in such a positive way and not only did I get to play in the game but I was used in the posters and banners. My father who lives in Puerto Rico was so proud and so was the rest of my family. It has always been a dream of mine to play in Puerto Rico and I was able to make it a reality.

What does being a Love City / Shove City member mean to you?
It means being associated with one of the nicest hardest working group of people I could ever meet. Giving all they have on and off the track. It also means having one of the most amazing support groups I have ever had in my life a derby family. People that will be there for you during the bad and good.

Any inspiring words for new skaters?

Don't ever give up on anything you love.  When I started I was not a natural skater or awesome player. I could hardly skate and practically tripped over my own feet now I can do things I never thought I could. Limits are what you put on your self. If you believe in you eventually everything else will fall in place.

Worst Injury?
It’s hard to choose just one.  In the span of 2 years  I have dislocated both knees, snapped my quadriceps tendon pinched my sciatic nerve and had a Grade II concussion. I also have wear knee braces that make me look like Forest Gump 24/7. So all of the above..

What's your best hit / favorite moment of a game?
Lipstick Militia VS Trauma queens was the first game my children came to see me play. The next day my 5 year old told everyone he would see, "Do you know my mom is super strong and can beat anyone up? She can." In his eyes I was a super hero and larger than life.

How did you choose your derby name & number?
The president of the company I work for gives everyone nick names. At business meetings he started to address me as A-Lo a play off of Jennifer Lopez. When I joined derby, the idea of having a pseudo persona was strange to me. I have always been just me and wanted to stay true to that so after a year of trying to find an awesome name I decided to stick with A-Lo. People usually think my number came from the song Baby got Back but the inspiration behind it is actually from  the song Brick house by The Commodores . "Cause this lady's stacked and that's a fact She knows she's built and knows how to please Sure enough to knock a man to his knees 36-24-36, what a winning hand Shes a brick house... "

Hobbies outside of derby
I love everything and anything arts and crafts. I am a crotchet addict and can pretty much crochet anything Blankets, Scarves, Baby Clothes,Dolls you name it I can crochet it.  I am a crochet ninja.

Strange fact about yourself?
I love dressing up in costume. Give me a reason to dress up and I will be there. In my household it is Halloween 365 days a year. I'm obsessed with batman. I can play the banjo and am a country girl at heart. If I could live in the country off the land I would be the happiest person in the world.
