Alice Brawl #5000

Started Playing Derby: June 2012

Team:  South Jersey Roller Derby Travel Team, Kill Scouts

How did you choose your derby name & number?

My derby name is based on the suffragist Alice Paul. I was a Women’s & Gender Studies major in college, so I wanted to pick a name based on a prominent feminist. There were many others on the table, but I ultimately picked Alice Brawl because it was unique and seemed to be the right fit. My number is from my favorite drag queen’s name, Alaska 5000.

What led you to roller derby?
For the past few years I have been a nanny. One day the 5 year old I was babysitting wanted to watch a Monster High movie – the movie ended up being about a roller derby type game. While the movie was still playing, I started searching local roller derby leagues online. I came across SJRD, emailed for more information and ended up going to practice that night!

What was your biggest hurdle when you first started derby?

When I first started I was VERY nervous to hit and get hit with any actual force. That fear lasted for a while and I was always overly cautious in the pack. After surviving a few big hits, I realized it wasn’t so bad. Recently I felt too good about my ability to take hits and ended up telling MC SlamHer I wasn’t afraid of her anymore… Probably a mistake, oops!

What does being a South Jersey Roller Derby member mean to you?

Being a member of South Jersey Derby means a lot of things – it is definitely an environment where everyone is helpful and there for you, whether your problems are derby-related or otherwise. I really stepped out of my comfort zone when I became a member of South Jersey Derby. I would consider myself more of an introvert and this team is definitely a group of incredibly outgoing and enthusiastic people, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

What would you recommend for a new rookie joining the league?

I think the most important thing for rookies is to be on your skates as much as possible! Go to as many practices as you can, but also skate outside or at a rink when there isn’t practice. The more you’re on your skates, the more comfortable you will be on them!

What is your derby goal?

I have many goals but my top three are: getting faster, being able to skate backwards in gameplay, and hitting someone hard enough to actually knock them down.

Any notes you'd like to share?

I’d like to give a big shout out to the Kill Scouts for welcoming me into their team and for always encouraging me to push myself! *cookie emoji*

What is a fun fact about yourself?

In every aspect of my life, except derby, I am known as “one of the Scholz sisters.” My younger sister Hilda and I are constantly told we look like twins – our family and neighbors can barely manage to tell us apart (but our close friends swear that we look nothing alike). We have done nearly everything together. We went to all the same schools from elementary to college, were on the diving and track teams in high school, and have worked together at Farias Surf & Sport for the past 5 years. But I joined roller derby solo, so it is probably the only group I’ve been a part of where some people don’t even realize I have a sister!
